The Alleys
The alleyways in San Francisco’s Mission District are known for their vibrant murals and local shops. The pedestrians flow into the alleyways from the main roads to immerse themselves in colorful places free from traffic, noises, and direct sunlight. Embracing this local feature, the project steps away from the adjacent buildings to open up the “alleys” that provide outdoor gathering, marketing, and resting space for people.

Program / Massing
The project serves as a community center and a printmaking studio. The programs dedicated to the general public are concentrated along the alleys, while the printmaking studios occupy the street side. A courtyard is in the middle, with a staircase and walkways connecting the different spaces.

Circulation / Openings
The gaps and openings align to the axes formed by the circulation. The permeability inherited from the alleyways is an essential experience this project intends to create. While people move up and down the staircase or along the walkways, they see through the gaps and openings.
