Columns

2021

Columns was intrigued by the sequential walking/viewing experience generated by the column arrangement at the Palais-Royal in Paris, which sits on a uniform grid but with variations in spacings and forms. The project alienates columns’ geometry from their functional meaning, using the primitive form to create a variety of “scenes”. As visitors move through the project, they experience a theatrical sequence of encounters and interactions with the “columns” that continue to test out alternative ways the columns define (and are defined by) spaces and programs.

The facades of the project were inspired by the many warehouses around the site, with corrugated sheets and warehouse windows, aligned and misaligned.
